Bulk grain storage for APB Port of Ipswich delivered in 10 weeks
The Client: The Port of Ipswich
ABP’s Port of Ipswich is the UK’s largest grain export port, situated at the head of the River Orwell, handling 2 million+ tonnes of cargo per year. ABP are the UK’s leading ports group with 21 ports in total handling around ¼ of the UK’s seaborne trade.
What did we do?
This client needed a permanent, turnkey bulk grain storage solution which could be delivered quickly and cost-effectively, so we supplied and managed the creation of a large steel structure covering a total of 2,035 sqm.
For this project we managed every part of the build from the groundworks, drainage, electricity supply and the building erection – delivering a fully turnkey structure, fit for use.
What were the challenges of this project?
- Strict site perimeter requiring a completely bespoke design
- Pre-cast concrete retaining wall system
- Design to be buildings control compliant with wind & snow loadings compliant with local annex regulations
- Requirement for a large roller shutter to facilitate bulk delivery lorries
Losberger De Boer provided a one-stop-shop solution for ABP, acting as the principal contractor on this project. We took care of everything from the groundworks, drainage, electricity and supply of the building itself.
The structure: A pre-fabricated steel frame 37w x 55l x 9.5h covering a total area of 2035 m2. We installed a tapered column building system to create a wide clear-span space without the need for interior supports.
This structure is rated ‘A’ for energy efficiency, compliant with sustainability standards such as LEED certification, ISO 14001, BREEAM and Agenda 21.
