The Barcelona Open returns with fans and VIP guests
As his opponent Stefanos Tsitsipás’ final forehand shot drops inches behind the baseline, Spanish tennis superstar Rafael Nadal lets out a scream and allows himself to collapse onto the gravel of the Barcelona Open Banc Sabadell’s centre court, his arms raised in triumph and total extasy. The 35-year old’s heartfelt and emotional celebration is a fitting end to a tournament that is special and historic in many ways.
Special, because not only did Nadal win the prestigious ATP tournament for a record-breaking twelfth time, but also because he did so in a time were events are few, and because he was able to play in front of an actual crowd with tennis fans, dignitaries and VIP guests.
Nadal’s triumph ends a long and bumpy ride for all parties that were dedicated to making sure the 2021 edition of this tournament could take place. Due to the erratic nature of the pandemic, regulations and restrictions changed continuously throughout the months leading up to the event. The main VIP building we delivered was redesigned nine times, to accommodate new changes in regulations.

Highly flexible design
In the end, we were able to deliver a 2000 m2 VIP facility with a highly flexible structural design that would allow us to adapt the internal partitions even during the tournament. This way, we made sure that we could adjust the lay-out at all times if changes in Covid-regulations demanded it, providing the hosts with the certainty that the tournament could proceed as planned.
The facility we delivered included a players restaurant, hospitality terrace and VIP restaurant. We also provided several support structures, ranging from the entrance to restrooms and kitchens. The total capacity of all areas was reduced to less than 30% of that of previous editions. For instance, 1050 m2 of restaurant space was used to accommodate 200 people at the same time, so guests would enjoy their meals in different shifts.
