Brighton Royal Pavilion Ice Rink

The Ice Rink at Brighton’s Royal Pavilion is an annual project for our team and also the UK’s only Christmas ice rink powered exclusively by wind and wave energy!

The Royal Pavilion is one of the most distinctive and beautiful buildings in Britain. Located in the heart of Brighton, it offers an unmatched setting for a magical Christmas skate.

What do we build?

We create 2 main venues - The skate exchange and cafe/dining area as well as an entryway.

  • Ticket office - 10.3 m x 12.5 m 3.4 m leg
  • Skate exchange - 11.3 m x 32.5 m x 3.4 m leg
  • Cafe/dining area - 8.3 m x 40 m x 3.4 m leg

The design elegantly frames the ice rink with both structures, offering skaters stunning views of the pavilion, transforming into a captivating spectacle when it gets lit up at night.

The Challenge

We have many years of experience working on historical heritage sites with Grade 1 listed buildings, and we understand the challenges of constructing in venues with limited space and the need to protect the site carefully.

Project Manager Rosie Loughran tells us more about the project: "One of the main challenges we have building on a historic site is protecting the building and the grounds. One specific thing we must consider here is that there is a lot of old Victorian pipework under the ground of the gardens, so we have to be considerate with truck sizes and where we park our vehicles."

Project Manager Rebecca Chipping adds, “We’ve been building at Brighton Pavilion for a number of years, and each year, we use the same team who know the site and the venue. It is an honour to be part of this project at such an iconic venue.”

Sustainable Considerations

Shella Parkin of Laine Ltd talks about the ice rink: “We strongly believe that Christmas rinks like ours must choose renewable energy to meet their power needs. It is vital to ensure that having fun does not come at a cost to the environment.”

This project is a great example of how sustainability can be at the heart of seasonal celebrations. Laine Ltd first launched the ice rink at the Royal Pavilion in 2010 and has operated it annually ever since. It is now one of the most successful Christmas attractions in the country, having welcomed well over a million people since its doors first opened.

Client Testimonial

“We are the only event anywhere near this size that has been allowed to do anything on the East Lawn here, we had to set the bar high because it was going to be very very visible. Our build and derig is tight, our vehicles are one in and one out, it just requires a level of understanding of the difficulties and sensitivity to this historic spot."

"The inspiration for this was actually going to Somerset House Ice Rink in London, and we thought wouldn't it be amazing if it could embody Christmas for families."

"Losberger De Boer is a really good fit for a project like this. If I was to describe Losberger De Boer in one sentence, I would say absolute commitment to quality, the best we could possibly do and a willingness to work together to create that vision"
