The Rise of Padel - The Fastest Growing Sport in the World.

Published on

Padel has seen exponential growth over the last few years worldwide, especially in the UK.

  • 25 million+ active players in 110 countries
  • Over 40,000 Padel courts globally (26% compound annual growth rate)
  • An additional 250 Padel court facilities were built in the UK between 2022 and 2023 (That’s an increase of 116% in just 1 year!)

"People get genuinely addicted to it" – Says Michael Gradon, who is a former FTSE100 and Wimbledon Director.

Where did Padel come from?

Padel was invented in Mexico in the 1960's and shortly after, introduced to Spain, who have become the champions of Padel with over 3.7 million players and over 22,000 courts! Fast-forward to 2019, the Lawn Tennis Association formed an alliance with British Padel, and LTA Padel was born.

Padel is growing in all corners of the world; for example, 3 years ago in Sweden, there were less than 100 Padel courts; today, there are 800+ with over half a million players.

What is Padel?

Imagine a sport that marries the finesse of tennis with the enclosed thrill of squash. Padel is played on a smaller court, encased by walls that are very much part of the game's strategy.

Unlike tennis, Padel utilises solid, stringless racquets and promotes a style of play that leans more towards strategic placement than brute power. Typically a doubles game, it emphasises teamwork and social interaction, making it a hit among enthusiasts looking for both competitive and social play.

Distinctive Features of Padel?

  • Court Design: Padel courts are compact, surrounded by walls that influence play, and devoid of the expansive boundaries seen in tennis.
  • Equipment: Padel racquets are solid, without strings, and designed to offer control and precision rather than power. The balls are slightly smaller and less pressurised than their tennis counterparts.
  • Rules: Serving in Padel is underarm, setting a different pace and strategy right from the game's inception. Scoring mirrors that of tennis, but the enclosed play and wall bounces introduce a unique tactical depth.

Why would I use a semi-permanent structure?
