Game of Thrones Premier at The Tower of London
A stunning entrance, viewing theatre, red carpet and after party all built within 18 days.
The organisers required a location which would chime with the epic battles and power struggles depicted in Games of Thrones to give the series premiere stand-out quality and maximise audience figures.
All the accommodation had to become part of the theatrical setting and experience – to nod towards the Game of Thrones series.
The Challenge
Our brief was to create a remarkable event within the iconic Tower of London's moat. This included accommodating 1000 guests, delivering a stunning red carpet experience for the cast and media, and constructing a cinema with luxurious tiered seating.
The space also needed to transform seamlessly into a captivating venue for a highly successful after-show party, ensuring an unforgettable atmosphere for all attendees.
The biggest challenge of all was to fit the structure within the moat at the Tower of London.
Building on challenging grounds
As a whole, the Tower of London is a complex of several buildings set within two concentric rings of defensive walls and a moat. Building an event of this scale on top of the historic moat of the Tower presented significant technical challenges, requiring precision and sensitivity to the site’s heritage.
With the moat around 8 metres below ground, access was limited, requiring all equipment to be craned in. This then presented further complexities to the installation as the low weight loading over the moat meant the crane had to be positioned further back.
Working in the heart of London, amidst one of the UK’s most iconic landmarks, required meticulous logistical planning to ensure the entire structure could be safely assembled without impacting the historic site.
Despite these challenges, the team expertly navigated these constraints, delivering a flawless build that respected both the venue and its surroundings.
The Solution
Our teams created a variety of venues to support the event, with additional structures to accommodate back-of-house production, kitchen and catering, VIP toilets, and lavatories for other guests.
The main event venues were dressed in bespoke blue drapes to complement the aesthetic while the cinema was clad internally with black serge material to create total blackout and to give the acoustic insulation required.
All structures were built and delivered to the client in just 2 weeks.
Client Testimonial
"We’re an event consultancy and have worked with Losberger De Boer for a long time, and they are our go-to temporary structure supplier. When we came to them with this brief, the time scale was incredibly tight – just four weeks to the launch.
What is special about the team is that it’s never just a structure they supply; it’s always a solution.
On this occasion, we had an incredibly complicated site, the moat at the Tower of London. Not only was it less than thirty metres wide and eight metres down, but there was no truck access at all, and everything had to come in by crane, starting with 60 tonnes of trackway, which we had to use without leaving a mark.
The team came up with ideas about how we could do things and make the site work. The first structure we put in place was for the production team, and we worked along from there.
The experience of Losberger De Boer in the theatrical industry means they always consider the aesthetics and how to make not just a structure that works but one that looks brilliant too.
The eye for detail means you know every angle will be considered and look good. The completely transparent media space was perfect in the moat, with spectators able to look down into it, and following this, we had the auditorium, which was the second biggest cinema in the UK, seating 1,200 people. It was an incredible achievement to deliver so much in such a complicated space so quickly and safely.
This was a premium event for a premium brand that was watched by the world, and with Losberger De Boer’s help, it worked perfectly."
